Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Jessica in Medford, MA
This student experiences difficulty with reading comprehension. Therefore, during this exercise, we focused on completing a reading comprehension assignment that his teacher had given him. Specifically, the student had previously read a story about owls. Therefore, during this session, he had to answer a series of questions which tested his knowledge and understanding of what he had read. In addition, the assignment required the student to demonstrate his knowledge of adding prefixes to words and putting words in alphabetical order. I taught him the strategy of doing so, and the student grasped that concept quickly.

The first student and I spent most of our time this session working on the worksheet packet that he has to turn in on Monday. We also read 2 chapters, focusing on vocabulary words that we had discussed in earlier chapters and set a game plan for the reading he needs to do by Sunday for us to be on schedule to finish the book and assignments by Monday. The second student worked on a science packet instead of math again today. Of all the things I have worked with him on, the periodic table/elements (what he's doing now) seems to be the easiest for him so I might lean towards doing more math over the next week or so.

I used a reading worksheet to work on the student's vocabulary and context clues. He began to understand the need to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a sentence or paragraph. He was excited that he finished, and he is excited to do another reading worksheet about basketball player Larry Bird during our next session.

During this session the student and I looked at his research paper. He already had most of the paper written when I arrived, so we started by revising some of the points. Mostly, we focused on making sure all his points were specific and well constructed, avoiding ambiguity and redundancy. We worked on how to best support his second main point and also why it's important to refer back to this thesis statement at the end of each body paragraph. We were able to complete the paper during our session.

The student and I began the session by playing Uno with second grade high frequency words. He struggled with the words "enough," "since," and "difficult". We then worked on his spellings words with the oo/ou spellings. We sorted them into the appropriate groups. Then, on the mock spelling test, he misread 3/15 words- "should," "stood," and "understood". The second round, he didn't miss any words. Next, were reviewed his list of high frequency words. He completed the exercise in 1 min 46 seconds. We then read the book Best Seat in Second Grade.

English Tutoring review by Kathleen in Medford, MA
The student had received a grade of 18/20 on her summer writing assignment. We discussed the feedback she got from her teacher and went over some tips for how to approach revising an essay. She had predicted most of the feedback from her teacher. I pointed out that it is great that she can critique her own writing, but the next step is to critique her own writing and then fix it before turning it in.
