Ultimately, what I hope to effect in my students is some kind of core change in how they perceive, communicate, or act in the world. These core changes, in addition to the standards of close reading and academic writing, include cognitive dexterity, greater complexity of thought, a democratic view of language, and awareness of cultural modes of representation.
