English Tutoring review by Linda in Lowell, MA
Today, the student and I reread a book that we have been working on for the past week. I had her orally retell the story so that we could practice sequencing. She then wrote about her favorite part of the story. After her draft was done, we reread our story to practice proofreading. We looked for punctuation marks, sight words that were spelled wrong, and capital letters that are suppose to be lowercase. She did a great job and washable to find most errors on her own.

English Tutoring review by Kevin in Lowell, MA
The student and I co-read a leveled reader and discussed its content. We worked on an activity that focused on reading, comprehension, following instruction, and drawing. The student read prompts about what action to take and in what order with the intention of creating a piece of art. She really enjoyed this activity. We will finish the activity on Friday.

English Tutoring review by Jessica in Lowell, MA
We focused a bit more on writing this session. The student read a book from school with me. He wrote a sentence about himself. I am encouraging him to just write, and then we are making a final draft of the piece afterwards with the correct spelling. After this, he worked on another card for his babysitter. I am working on building his confidence as a writer, and encouraging him to write from his own phonetic spelling in order to build his writing skills and reading comprehension. We then played a game which continues to practice connecting words by their beginning sounds. I noticed the student has trouble deciphering which sounds come at the beginning, middle and end of a word. Also, he particularly has trouble identifying vowels in the middle of words.

English Tutoring review by Clinton in Lowell, MA
During this session, the student and I talked about his writing in general, how his English and writing courses have been throughout high school, and his approach to his college essays. He prepared drafts of 2 separate college essay prompts for me to read, and I read through them and made comments. I also provided him with some handouts on how to approach the college essay writing process. He has very good ideas for his essays. I feel that he is very teachable. He is motivated to do well, and this will help him a lot. I asked him to revise the 2 drafts that he prepared and using my comments, improve them so that I can read them at the next session. I also asked him to go to the website of his top choice college and view their essay prompts and to start brainstorming ideas about what to write for those essays. He was very friendly and easy to work with.
