Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

English Tutoring review by Robert in Harvey, IL
We began by discussing a worksheet called "Compensation Culture," which presented various lawsuits that can occur in a litigious society. The student had to say whether the lawsuit was legitimate and if not, how the situation could be dealt with alternatively. We then reviewed his recent vocabulary by doing a few matching and reading exercises with them. We finished with a writing exercise in which the student had to compare the points made in an article and a lecture. He put a lot of effort into this essay, and since we ran out of time, his homework is to finish it. I explained to the student that his English 1301 class will probably involve a lot of writing, so we'll focus on this in the future.

Today, we covered past tense verb ending pronunciation, -ing word ending pronunciation, and th word pair pronunciation. We used voice recording and teach back methods and these two techniques were successful. He is doing great and next time we will continue where we left off, with an emphasis on the pronunciation of "th", "oo" an "ll" word pairs.

During today's session, we continued to work with grammar and writing skill. The student was given a prompt during the last session to complete for homework. His writing was a bit off topic and it contained some grammatical errors. We went through his writing to correct the errors and put him back on topic. We also practiced vocabulary skills.

English Tutoring review by Danica in Harvey, IL
First, the student and I worked on identifying letters and the correct order of the alphabet. She created an alphabet caterpillar with correct upper and lower case letters. She was very enthusiastic to sing the alphabet song, and did so frequently to remember her letters. At home, she can practice lowercase letter recognition, especially letters that do not look exactly the same as the uppercase version. Next, we worked on recognizing rhyming words to increase phonological awareness. She was so positive, focused, and eager to learn! She did an excellent job of identifying each picture and finding matches. She can play the rhyme time game at home, as well. I look forward to working with her again.
