Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by John in Georgetown, TX
On Saturday, we transitioned from working with adverbs/adjectives as opening or delayed aspects of sentences to working with absolute phrases - how to identify them, and how to manipulate them. Since the grammar book provides examples, mix and match activities, and then activities that require the student to replicate/mimic the kinds of sentences under discussion, we spent quite a bit of time going over these. We also discussed Fahrenheit 451 at great length, talking about dystopian fiction and how it is often used as a means of societal critique. For the following Wednesday, I asked him to continue working on his story.

I did a preliminary evaluation of the student to determine his proficiency level. Student is ranked in an intermediate basic level of oral proficiency and a basic level of reading and writing proficiency. During the session we covered determinate pronouns of place versus pronouns of quantity versus possessive pronouns to clarify grammatical and pronunciation doubts. We also covered sentence structure of simple and complex sentences.

We continued to work on his essay about the amount of school work in high school. We continuously work on this each time we meet. We add one new paragraph, and what we have so far. In addition we worked on grammar skills in regards to commas, semicolons, colons, and quotation marks.

English Tutoring review by Kyra in Georgetown, TX
I began the student's lesson by reviewing her spelling and vocabulary words. Afterwards, I taught her about Direct Objects, how they are used, and how to identify them. I then gave the student a few worksheets based on identifying Direct Objects to make sure she understood them. Finally, I gave the student a writing assignment as homework so I can see how her writing has progressed in a relaxed environment. My other student's lesson began by discussing her previous week's practice test results and going over the questions she missed. Once she understood her errors, I had her take another practice section that I will grade by next week, and we wrapped up the lesson by reviewing her practice section words.

English Tutoring review by Courtney in Georgetown, TX
Both students were present for this session. We did not meet the week prior, so they finished the rest of Great Expectations. I asked them to write a summary in preparation, and then a response in person. The themes they focused on were family and money. I also asked them to write about why the book has this particular title. We followed this with Q&A about the book. For the next session, which is not until August 18, they are reading The Call of the Wild.

English Tutoring review by Sara in Georgetown, TX
We began with a five minute quick write. I brought along an essay that I had written in college and the outline on which it was based. The student read over both and I explained to her how I made sure to have specific examples lined up for each point in the essay. She had a prompt for an essay assignment on Othello. We went over the prompt and worked together to make a cohesive outline, focusing on what would make for a strong, provable thesis. I feel that she has a strong grasp for what a thesis is and what it requires. With more practice, she will become more comfortable in forming those thoughts into clear, well written essays.
