English Tutoring review by Aundrea in Cranston, RI
The student and I began studying the sight words today. I brought a story containing all 220 sight words, and we read a bit at the end. I also brought flashcards with the words and we played memory with them. He loved it because he won. We're also going to use them for spelling tests.

English Tutoring review by Toniann in Cranston, RI
Today we focused on assessing the student's specific needs. He worked on a reading packet he got from school, focusing on analogies and similes. We then read a Captain Underpants book, getting through the first chapter, and pausing to check comprehension and vocabulary. He has a good fluency for his age but struggles with comprehension. I am planning on lowering the reading level of the material he is working on and focusing on comprehension skills such as character development and plotline.

English Tutoring review by Erica in Cranston, RI
For this week's session, the student had read more of his assigned school books. He had also drafted (and cited!) answers to the first two questions for his Global assignment. We spent much of the session going over these two paragraphs and revising them for their structures, arguments, and grammar. We also had a good discussion about his English book that I hope will further prepare him for class discussion. For both books, he had absorbed many details, and he was able to put them in conversation and contrast. For our next session, he will read more of both books. He will draft one or two more answers for his Global assignment and use the first two revised answers as models. I have also asked him to come up with some questions about his English book that we can discuss next week.

English Tutoring review by Grayson in Cranston, RI
On Tuesday, the student and I did a lot of reading. We also focused more on long vowels which he continues to struggle with since he has only been reading books primarily with short vowels. He still struggles with b and d consonant words. However, he is progressing and is definitely going to be on grade level when he enters first grade. He knows about 70 sight words which will be helpful.

English Tutoring review by Tarysha in Cranston, RI
The student and I finished constructing our cars, with him reading the instructions aloud to me. When we completed them, we used banana gram pieces to make a racetrack out of words, then raced our cars through the track. We also went over some flashcards and read a short book aloud.

English Tutoring review by Shaneureka in Cranston, RI
During today's session, I reviewed the four sight words (of, word, what, from) from last week. The student was able to recognize all four words. I gave her four new sight words (there, were, about, your) that she missed on the assessment. While reading, we focused on prompting her to use the beginning-middle-end sounds of words to decode new words when reading. She is showing more initiative when decoding new words and her reading confidence is improving. I also had her read the book a second time to improve her reading fluency. For reading comprehension we reviewed finding the main idea of a book and four supporting details.
