What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Gina in Cedar Park, TX
The student and I had another good session on Monday. We went over organization and his folder first. We spent most of the session going over coordinating conjunctions, adjectives, and comma placement. The rest of the session was working on paragraph writing about Lewis and Clark. He is good at creative writing, so it was fun to hear him create his own story where he inserted himself into the expedition.

The student began this session by completing her unit test, which covered Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest. She breezed through the multiple choice section of the test. Then, she formulated succinct answers for the free response section. I was extremely pleased with her answers because each was well thought out and properly constructed. Her writing is improving. After her unit test, we discussed the Act 2 of Romeo and Juliet. She completed the accompanying assessments, scoring a 100 on both assessments.

English Tutoring review by Jessica in Cedar Park, TX
During this session, I help the student prepare for a vocabulary quiz. To be successful on the quiz, the student needed to know the spelling, definition, and part of speech of the words on the list. Also, she had to be able to write a sentence using the word correctly. Therefore, I reviewed all of these elements of the words with the student. It was evidence that she had been studying the words because she only experienced difficultly with a few of the spellings and definitions. I commended the student for hard work.

English Tutoring review by Janet in Cedar Park, TX
The student e-mailed me his 'How it feels to be Absent Minded Me' essay. I spent about 35 minutes reviewing it, correcting grammatical errors, and typing up comments (primarily alternative vocabulary or minor re-wordings to clarify meaning). I emailed it back to him that evening. No concerns, he's doing well, even if he did struggle with balancing run-on thoughts with clear sentences. It was a harder essay for him than the highly structured prompts.

English Tutoring review by Ramsey in Cedar Park, TX
Yesterday, was our first meeting and it was a pleasure to meet the student. We got a chance to talk amongst ourselves and share each others' experiences with school, traveling and life in general. After familiarizing myself with him and his passions, I had a broad understanding of what he wants to accomplish with his college essays. We went over his preliminary college essay which was quite good. I have suggested points and stylistic strategies to maximize the essay's effectiveness and I believe he was receptive.
