English Tutoring review by Sterling in Brockton, MA
I met with the student tonight to work on literature and biology. We started out by analyzing Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. He displayed a firm understanding of the play's underlining meaning and themes. I am confident that he will excel on his literature exam tomorrow. Afterward, we then ventured into an overview of mRNA translation and protein synthesis. He quickly picked up on the details of tRNA (adds on amino acid...anticodon match up with mRNA codon), mRNA and rRNA. We also went over the A P E sites and how a polypeptide chain is formed from a string of amino acids connected by peptide bonds (covalent) to form proteins. He did extremely well tonight!

English Tutoring review by Kenna in Brockton, MA
The student received her new spelling words for the week so I had her study them by writing them three times each. Next, we worked on her math homework. She had to complete a work sheet that had her counting how many tens there were and how many ones there were in a number. I can definitely see her confidence growing with reading. In the past, when we had a math worksheet, she would ask me to read the directions. This time she wanted to do it herself. She read two new books with little assistance. She also worked on an activity sheet in which she had to read a sentence and fill in the missing word based on the picture. She was able to do this without any assistance. Her confidence and interest in reading have increased.

The student's class is reading excerpts from "A Tale of Two Cities," so today we worked on close reading techniques. After spending some time on an early passage in the novel, we looked at a passage which she had to write about for homework and took notes. I found her generally quite capable at this, but she needed some help understanding irony in narrative voice. After I explained how to detect it, though, she seemed to get it.

The student and I worked on reading fluency, comprehension, prosody, and textual analysis using details from the text. We then worked on the appropriate mechanics of writing, as well as the use of textual evidence in your answers. Afterward, we practiced using a storyboard graphic organizer to put together a story for his portfolio for the Digital Harbor Project.

The student's English class is beginning work on a research paper (paper 3). During this session, I taught him how a research paper is structured, especially focusing on identifying which kinds of sources a research paper needs. We developed his thesis statement so that it would better guide his research. Additionally, his teacher had given him a worksheet to help him locate sources, so we worked on that together. I could see that his ability to think critically about a research paper exceeded my expectations; he seemed to really get this kind of paper in a way that didn't happen with the previous one. For our next session, we will work on an outline together, a process that will hopefully extend his excellent critical thinking into the writing process.
