Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Lindsay in Bartlett, TN
The student and I read more stories today. I am getting more and more of an idea of what areas he is the most challenged by. He struggles with vowel sounds, so we did some extra work reviewing the different soft and hard vowel sounds and the best way to identify those in words. He seemed more comfortable with me today now that he has met me before. He has a high attention to details and is engaged in finding links in the stories.

This was my first session with the student. We worked on a precis for her AP English Language course. I showed her some techniques for aligning the rubric with the precis, and we worked through the logic model to revise the project.

English Tutoring review by Jo in Bartlett, TN
Today I began the session by having the student read a short passage from a reading card. Then I had him select 3 words from the passage and write his own story in which he had to include the 3 selected words. We did this for 2 different passages. After he completed each story, he read the story to me. I then corrected his spelling and instructed him on where to place the end of sentence period. After reading, we played a math game in which we took turns drawing 2 cards from a spread of playing cards. The player drawing the cards then added the two cards to get a sum. If the player gave the correct answer, a point was given to that player. I had him 'help' me with my addition when it was my turn. I also reviewed with him how to use the math chart I showed him from last session. This chart discourages him from using his fingers to add and gives him a visual for how addition/subtraction works.

In today's session we worked on the student's reading, specifically with fluency and word decoding using consonants and vowel sounds, and repetitive words. We read a book that should have been appropriate for her grade level but she had difficulties with many of the words. She does not struggle with identifying the sounds that the letters and clusters make when the words are segmented into phonemes. Her difficulty is when we put the words back together again. Even with the struggle of maintaining fluent reading of the book, she seemed to comprehend what we were reading and was able to stop us in the story to say that we read the same phrase on other pages and to then find them. Her attitude towards the material was very enthusiastic at the beginning and throughout the book. She is not deterred by unknown words, even if she was not able to fully sound out some of the longer words. She wears a constant smile on her face and seemed to really immerse herself in the story. I do not have any real concerns about this student because I feel that she has a good foundation for reading, and think that practice and strategies will help her to be a more fluent and comprehending reader. I discussed with her aunt that reviewing and learning sight words will help her to recognize frequently used words while we continue to work on her identifying and putting together words based on other phonics patterns. I think the win in this session is the sheer enthusiasm that she shows for learning, specifically reading in this session. She is eager to learn and does not get defeated.

English Tutoring review by Michael in Bartlett, TN
We spent the entire session working on the text of the video the student is putting together for a competition. The video can only last ten minutes. He and I tried every possible trick we could think of for editing the piece, and we finally got it down to ten minutes, thirty seconds. We will meet again on Saturday night to try to complete the project. I am really proud of the way he has thrown himself into this project, and I'm happy to be along for the ride. He is doing real science.

English Tutoring review by Linda in Bartlett, TN
The student is reading the leveled books I showed him. They are short texts targeting specific vowel/ consonant patterns for each level. He is making good progress recognizing words. We always review the previous book(s) before moving on to a new one. I timed him today as he read one of the earlier books and he read it in under 2 minutes. He was proud of himself. I asked comprehension questions about the books, and with some probing, he is able to elaborate on the details he remembers. We usually end each session with the student playing Sight Word Bingo on the laptop and with the Build a Car game that he enjoys.
