Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has a research paper to complete on a famous invention or inventor. He choose a very hard topic but we are working on it. He selected electromagnetic invention and I had him look up information to complete some research. He had to write on note cards based on the information he found. He is required to do ten and we finished them. Then we worked on an outline and a development of a thesis statement. I gave him homework to do more research and learn more on his topic."
"The student again said that she did not have any assignments from her teachers. She said they are starting to read a new book in English class and they are still learning about types of government in Geography class. She worked on reading comprehension tonight. She started the session with a reading level of 8 and ended with a reading level of 6. She focused on reviewing the explanations. I talked to her about the importance of this for standardized testing, including the SAT. She seemed to enjoy working through the readings online."
"Student did well in his session on Monday. He didn't have any assigned homework in literature, so we worked through a book called Grendel that he is reading in class. He couldn't remember much from the first chapter when we first started, so we read the chapter together and answered comprehension questions throughout. He continues to have a firm understanding of basic plot points in the stories, but can improve upon his understanding of complex ideas and characters within the text. I have tried to focus most of my questions on more difficult topics like characterization, motivation, and authorial perspective. I look forward to working with him again on Wednesday."
"Today we reviewed ending sound, beginning sounds, short "a", and short "i". The student read several books to me: "Kiss a Pig", "The Fat Rat", "Matt and Rags". She also put a story into sequence from part 1 through part 4. She practiced writing short "a" and short "i" words. She reviewed shapes, colors, and action words."
"Today we reviewed helping verbs, troublesome verbs, present/present participle, and past participles, subject verb agreement, gerunds/ infinitives and subjunctive mood. The student took a practice quiz which indicated the need for more support with verbs ( present, present participle, and past participle). We reviewed his homework essay writing rough-draft. He will revise and complete the essay for homework. We then reviewed scored essays to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses. He is progressing in his writing. We will continue reviewing both the grammar and writing portion of the ACT test."
"Today we reviewed math concepts from sixth grade. We worked on integers, and the student got 100% on all five tests. We moved onto decimals and their everyday uses compared to fractions. He did excellent. I left him with review work and exercises."
