Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did very well in his session last night. We read another excerpt from Beowulf, filled out an ongoing character chart, reviewed vocabulary words and answered comprehension questions. He remained focused and thoughtful throughout the session, but we will still continue to work on his argumentative and analytic skills. Specifically, I would like him to be able to independently explore complex concepts within the text that go beyond basic plots points. We will continue to emphasize techniques for this thought process in future sessions. I look forward to working with him again on Wednesday."
"Today we continued working on creating good study notes from the Geography textbook (paraphrasing the assigned reading material into a readable study guide) The student is working on keeping up to date on the assigned reading material so he is ready for any quizzes/tests. He is very positive about new study & note taking techniques that I am showing him & shows good enthusiasm. He is showing more confidence & independence as his notes are becoming more succinct & in his own words."
"The student and I worked through his study sheet in advance of a grammar quiz that he'll have in school tomorrow. We found a separate packet online for additional clarity. As I taught him through it, a huge change happened in him -- he finally seemed to understand concepts, rather than individual exercises. With an additional hour of review on his own time, he should be in good shape and has a one page study guide / "cheat" sheet to review before the quiz."
"Today we reviewed sight words, long and short vowels, consonant blends, and word endings. The student reread a Level D book. We discussed the characters and what they did in the story and she then wrote about what both characters did and illustrated her writing."
"Today we reviewed some perfect past conjugation. The student corrected the past tense verbs on a paragraph about a zoo visit. We discussed areas that needed further clarification. Then she practiced speaking about one of her favorite movies, 'Her and Aranja.' She did a great job speaking about the movie with confidence. Then we discussed specific sentences that she said which needed small grammatical corrections. She will continue reading books aloud and will practice writing about them so that she can practice conjugating verbs. She will also continue studying the websites that were shared with her to help her clarify verb tenses, pronunciation, figurative speech, and sound pronunciation."
"Today we reviewed strategies to increase reading comprehension, constructed a summary, and continued the story map for the student's chapter book. I emphasized the importance of recording accurate details. We also worked on patterns and place value in math. She is very easy to work with and polite. She will continue reading at home using the strategies we devised. Her parents were encouraged to read daily to her."
