Today we reviewed sight words, vowel sounds, and consonant blends. We focused on our new sound - sl. The student read words with that sound. In handwriting we focused on U and u. She read a previous Level C book. She then read a new one. We went over the two words that gave her some difficulty and then reread it. She was able to recall the different types of weather that were discussed in the story.

Today we reviewed the "homework" the student had in her "Conversation in English" book. Her reading level is at an intermediate level; she has a good understating of grammar and a desire to understand all the grammar. We did mini-lessons on the use of the proposition to+verbs, direct objects and direct object pronouns, and differences between the following verbs: come, bring, pick up, drop off, and carry. She is motivated to continue her studying independently during the week.

Today we reviewed the first 8 letters of the alphabet, and added the corresponding lowercase letters. The student had great retention of the first 8 letters, and was able to grasp the lowercase letters with more ease than I expected. We played games with those 16 symbols for the rest of the session. On Wednesday, we will continue on to the next 8 letters of the alphabet, I-P.

Today we reviewed the previous work assigned to the student, which focused on comprehension strategies for reading. She was given a passage to read and task cards that focused on key components of the reading passage. While the student answered the questions from the task cards, her depth of understanding was at a surface level and she still struggles with decoding issues. We also reviewed multiplication facts and we continued to review angles (early geometry). She was given multiplication word problems to solve for homework, and I reassigned the reading passage, as I had planned to give her the comprehension quiz on the story but realized that she needed more scaffolding before she is ready for the test. We will continue working on these strategies in our next session.

Today we reviewed the student's diary and made corrections. Then we corrected the exercises done over the weekend. The student is still wanting practice for perfect tenses as well as progressive tenses ending in -ing. She is intent on knowing these tenses by heart before progressing to new material.

Today we reviewed the student's sight word cards. She was able to recognize 33/38 words. We also continued to work on reading comprehension skills. Currently we are learning how to find meaning using context cues, summarize texts using details from the text, and how to compare and contrast using text. During tutoring, I am using 4th grade level vocabulary and reading comprehension. Considering the challenges she has with reading, she is doing extremely well.
