Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed "ser" and "estar" and some vocabulary words. The student had finished a few exercises in her Spanish vocabulary book. We are reviewing animal and house words as well as food words. We spent a lot of time today on organization. Primarily, we organized the language notecards that she has with many vocabulary words and verbs that will be very important to her independent studying. Now that these notecards are organized by topic or verbs, it will make studying much easier."
"In this session we reviewed the preterite tense and verbs that were irregular in the preterite. We have not received any scores back yet but he feels confident about his quiz and test. We'll continue work with the irregular forms. He has several assignments to complete before our next session because he has the final coming up and must turn in his study guide. Still no concerns."
"Today, Student 1 and I worked on direct objects and stem-changing verbs. He was up to speed on his homework, and did not have any upcoming tests or quizzes, so I focused on reviewing some concepts that he may have missed which will help him as he moves up in Spanish. He was able to understand these concepts very easily. I believe he now has a handle on some verbs he was previously shaky with, and this will help in all aspects of sentence construction. With Student 2, I helped her with comprehending a very complex play her class is reading. This material is very advanced, but by the end of the session, it seemed as though she had a good idea of the general context of the play. I think she will be in a good position to fine-tune her understanding of the material and do well on her upcoming quiz."
"The student and I became acquainted. We spoke about my background with Spanish and discussed how long he had been studying Spanish, etc. Afterwards, he produced a homework assignment his teacher had given him with two parts: 1) use of comparison words to compare two images, and 2) use of prepositions to describe location of items in two similar images with slight variations. We completed this assignment together and went over how to use the verb 'estar' and basic structure in comparison sentences to ensure success. At the end of the session, we briefly reviewed his progress on a group project that his teacher recently assigned. He also mentioned an oral exam that he had had earlier that day and relayed his teachers feedback about areas he needs to work on in his spoken proficiency. He has two more final oral proficiency evaluations left this year and his mother would like to make sure he is prepared for those. I will try to work on this next session."
"We reviewed telling time today, and also worked on a worksheet that focused on the construction of object pronouns with infinitive verbs. This was pretty worksheet-focused. We played a couple games using the Spanish alphabet, and then played "horse" in Spanish. I made sure to speak to them in Spanish as much as possible. With Student 2, we did some running games and used numbers and colors. When we went inside, we played with a puzzle that has Spanish words on it. I asked him to find the words as I said them, by finding the letter sounds. We talked a bit about some of the sounds that are different in Spanish and English."
"We did speaking questions the whole time, first some on health that the student prepared and then another topic, jobs and education, that she hadn't yet, but she did great with both. Her freelance speaking is getting impressive, and she is always asking good and pertinent questions."
