We worked on the student's Columbia River diorama with mountains, a dam, and some salmon. We reviewed the major tributaries of the river, the breeding habits of salmon, and the purpose of a dam. Because she is using a lot of lichen as trees in her project, we also talked about the biology of lichens.

Today I helped the student prepare for the math quiz she will take this upcoming Thursday. We read the notes given to her by her teacher so we would know what to study and prepare for. I began the review by asking her to define some words from Unit 1. She got mixed up between complementary numbers and consecutive numbers so I wrote down those two words for her to study this week. Then we through the end of chapter review together and she did very well. We went over place value, patterns, estimation and rounding. She only had a question about front-end estimation with adjustments. I explained the three steps to her and she said she remembers going over this in class. The student was very alert this morning and she did very well during our tutoring session. I will assign her a couple of quizzes for homework as extra practice.

The student has changed to a different algebra II class, so she had a lot of new homework to look at. We looked at it together. It involved finding maximum values to quadratic equations and finding time aloft to quadratic equations that gave you the height as a function of time. These questions involved finding the roots of the quadratics either using algebraic manipulation or the quadratic equation.

The student and I covered hypothesis testing. Particularly, we covered the nuances of the null hypothesis verses alternative hypothesis. We also covered interpreting test statistics, z-score, t-test, standard deviation, and chi square. These concepts are very close to all clicking into place for him; he does very well conceptualizing statistics.

The student and I covered topics from his test including but not limited to simplifying exponents, finding the slopes of perpendicular lines and parallel lines given the slope, finding the solution sets to linear functions (straight lines), parallel lines, and perpendicular lines, and inequalities, defining a function given the parameters in word problems, and using the substitution method to find the solution set to systems of equations, solving exponential functions, and graphing inequalities. The student was very cooperative throughout the session. He required guided practice and prompts for most of the session.
