"In this session, the student and I returned to working on homework assignments from his textbook. The assignment that we worked on was from a single section about solving for variables in equations that needed to be factored. Before beginning, I told him that the key to solving these equations was to factor it out to such a form that we could identify how each factor in an expression could make the entire product zero. In comparison to the past sessions, in which we worked on specific problem types in exclusive sections, he encountered some difficulty in working through this assignment which combined all the concepts. In order to help him understand the specific strategies for each question type, I help him construct a flow chart of the different problems and strategies we would expect to work with. I also helped him to better solve quadratic equations with a leading coefficient other than 1, which was a concept we had first touched upon last week. At the end of the session, he informed me that we were actually ahead of his class in terms of the section we were working through. This was good news because his current knowledge of the subject will help him review and better understand it when it is covered in class."

"We completed the latest problems of the week (the student had already done the first problem on the probability of getting more heads than tails over multiple coin flips). The topics included evaluating an exponential expression with large exponents, solving an equation with two unknowns (used guess and check), a math bar problem with multiple ratios, and computing the LCM of the numbers 1-15. We used the remaining time to create a review sheet for the take-home test on diffusion and osmosis."
