Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Gave the student a vocab quiz; she scored 10/18. Planned to re-test on these words in the future. Identified ~20 new words for the next quiz. Assigned her practice book questions to work on. We will continue to work on vocab each session."
"First meeting. Covered general strategy & worked parts of a practice test as diagnostic. The student needs most help with reading comprehension & understanding, along with vocabulary. These are the areas on which will focus in the coming weeks."
"We finished the end of Practice Test 1; I timed the student in the three short sections (one each of math, verbal, and writing). I can see we'll need to discuss guessing strategy, because she seems to guess at certain questions but know the correct answer once she's not rushing through. That is one area I will make note to focus on in coming sessions. Time isn't an issue for her, but she gets anxious when I call out times, which I think contributes to making slight errors. This will be alleviated with practice in real world circumstances, which she will be doing. She's going to try to find her score report for next week, so I can see what specific areas I should focus on."
"Today, we completed the final preparation for the student's math test tomorrow. We reviewed the topic breakdown for the test and looked at specific Pre-Calculus and Algebra questions which could be asked."
"Today, we covered some math SAT test prep. I went over a bunch of different examples that utilize a wide variety of skills that one needs to know for the math section and also delved into some strategies that one can use on certain questions."
"Today, we covered some of the more advanced topics in Algebra. We went over the rules of exponents and the different forms they can take in a problem as well as handling polynomials and quadratic equations. We did some review problems of the last session at the beginning as well. Again, the student did really well today. He is very attentive throughout our two hour session. Even when he struggles with a problem, or is unsure of his approach, I can tell he is working hard to improve. To prepare for the next session on Tuesday, I asked him to finish the last diagnostic Math test and to do more online review problems of topics that we have covered. In addition, I think it would be wise to start reading a short sports article (or something else he enjoys) every day, which will get his mind ready for the reading passages on the test."
