Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did a little bit of everything. The student was very strong in everything except for reading, which is normally her strength. We will focus on the issues she had in reading and get her back to being strong in this area. We also went over possessives and pronouns for grammar."
"I picked up with the student again from where we'd left off. I had previously emailed her some notes for studying prior to our first session, making suggestions for strategies in different sections, and asking for some work to be completed if possible. She had gone through a practice ACT, minus the science and essay portions. We began by going through the science section, since that is one based on logic which is generally very unfamiliar to students. We spent roughly half of our time working on it and discussed different question types and strategies for approaching them. We also went through the mathematics section, where she had some slight troubles. Several questions were simply geometry issues, so I emphasized again approaching most geometric questions by looking at triangles (which are far and away the most common geometric object applied because it gives students at that level the most information). We finally discussed the English section, which she had found pretty easy. She was already able to finish in plenty of time, so we simply need to work on some of the strategies for approaching things and then she'll be set. At the end, we discussed the essay she was planning, how to approach it, the types of things to ensure she included, and finally when she would get it to me so I could have it prepared prior to our next meeting."
"Went over missed questions on ACT Exam from 6/13, ACT Science, especially graph interpretation questions, Math, with focus on review of elementary Algebra"
"We reviewed the material we covered previously, functions and graphs. We also covered some test tricks designed to help navigate the particular format of the ACT. Near the end, we even had time to go over matrices and how to use them in equations. The student did a great job of remembering old knowledge and picking up new skills. He was a pleasure to work with."
"We reviewed the math section he completed for homework. We reviewed trigonometric formulas, the distance formula, and important circle formulae. We discussed perpendicularity and slopes."
"We reviewed the math section through the lens of deriving equations even when they haven't been learned or memorized. Through this process, the student will improve her reasoning skills and has a contingency when something is forgotten. We also reviewed the prewriting process for the essay portion and looked at ways of analysing and evaluating the perspectives. For the next session, we will follow up on science and look forward to revisiting the prewriting again."
