Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I improvised and practiced the use of some modal verbs in impersonal sentences with "man," and the use of adjectives in the accusative."
"This was our final session before the student's final tests tomorrow. We reviewed all the grammar, including comparative and superlative adjectives, countable and uncountable nouns, and simple past and past progressive verbs. We practiced reading and listening, and I gave him a few tips on how to take reading and listening tests. He knows what to read for and what to listen for to complete his tests. As usual, he is a great student, and I know he will do well on his tests."
"Tonight I worked with the student on her midterm examination. We went over the order of operations and talked about math vocabulary. She has a composition notebook that she is writing math vocabulary and notes in on one side, and doing math problems on the other side. She has trouble with organizing in her math problems. I suggested she divide her paper up for each problem and number the boxes; she needs to go line by line and not skip any steps. She is working on her confidence as a mathematician. She seems to know most of the steps, but she second guesses herself. We worked on example problems on the ISEE, as well as questions from her packet. I am looking forward to working with her again! She is a sweetie and works very hard!"
"The student is doing well with his HSPT practice--today, I timed his practice sections for the first time. His reading comprehension section was pretty slow, but he did well with math. I think he gets tired out easily with the fast pace of the HSPT, but he is definitely showing improvement each section. Next time, we are going to try to do a full test and really challenge his mental stamina."
"During this session I helped the student prepare for his physics exam that he had the next day. He is taking a non-calculus based AP Physics course, which has material that is a lot tougher than what I typically see in AP Physics courses. We worked through several problems involving balancing the torque on a bar, and went into detail on the procedure involved in solving these types of problems. By the end of the session, he seemed a lot more prepared for the exam and had a good grasp on how to solve the problems he would be facing on it."
"We covered place value, decimal/fraction correlation, and math facts. The student is struggling with place value. We did a homework page together and we reviewed math facts. I administered a timed test with mixed practice math facts. Next week we will do the test again and the goal is that she improves her score each week. I asked the student's mom to make sure that she reviews her math facts by using flashcards. Before the next session, I will review some of her tests and identify concepts that the student needs to work on. She needs to continue to practice her addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication facts. She had a good attitude. We will work together to improve her math skills during our future sessions."
