Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I finished the sequences section and began working on the conics section. For the sequences section, we continued to work on writing explicit and recursive formulas for arithmetic and geometric sequences, predicting terms of a sequences, and finding sums of a finite arithmetic sequences or an infinite geometric sequence. For the conics section, we learned about writing equations for and graphing circles and parabolas, finding the focus and directrix of a parabola."
"The student wanted to meet for a quick session to go over the new material covered in his class since last week. We addressed slope intercept form and parallel lines. Furthermore, we practiced some examples with inequalities and absolute value functions."
"Today my main focus with this student was working with solving simple probability problems. We worked with unions and intersections, and also conditional probabilities. There were also problems where we had to use Venn diagrams and tree diagrams to solve the problems. We have one more session tomorrow before he has to take his final, and we will just wrap things up and I will answer any odds and ends questions he may have."
"We specifically covered word problems, equations of a line, and factoring. The student struggled with all three topics initially, but after having him read a few pages in a review book, explaining what he read to him in different words, and doing practice problems with him, he really developed a good understanding of the topics. We did not move onto a new topic until he got a question completely right on his own. That was when I knew he had confidence in himself, because he wasn't asking me to check his work after every step. Over just the past three days, he has made some major strides in not only his understanding of the material, but also his self confidence when it comes to math."
"We went over probability, and combinations. We also began reviewing for her biology final, so we went over her first unit focusing on macromolecules. We also went over study tips for when she studies alone."
"Today we had an extended session to finish going over the student's history essay. We continued to work on grammar and flow. I encouraged the student to think critically about each sentence and how they contributed to the overarching thesis of the essay. I was happy with where we ended up, and am confident that she'll do well on the assignment."
