Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began our session by working through a reading section; specifically, she did a long passage and a few short comparative passages. After that, she worked through an English section, on which she did very well. We wrapped up by completing a combined multiple choice/grid-in math section."
"The student and I wrapped up our grammar unit today, touching on subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and misplaced and dangling modifiers. We will move on to do some math in the coming lessons."
"The student and I finished the algebra section and started talking about the essay and the other parts of the writing material. We also did more work with the reading section, looking at passage-based problems. I noticed Monica initially gets a number of answers wrong, but when she examines the questions further, she usually can figure them out pretty quickly. I told her to take her time; that will be key on the test. Also, I told her to use her extra time to check her work during practice tests. Her test score this time was higher, and she seems to understand better when to skip questions and when to guess."
"We went over a math section and skimmed through some math chapters to see which concepts The student's seen before and which ones she hasn't. I then assigned her two math sections and a chapter for homework."
"As this was the first meeting, we went over some basics of the SAT. The student has some experience with the SAT, so the initial introductions went quickly. We worked on math sections on a practice test. It went well."
"We went over the student's math, reading, and writing sections. She did very well on reading and writing. We did some practice in her new reading workbook and ended with some math drills."
"I started preparing the student with subject matter contained in the SAT II subject test. We reviewed topics such as electronic configuration, radioactivity and types of radioactive decay, and touched upon half life."
"We worked mostly on writing today. I gave the student two sections of writing, and we went over the sections together, figuring out where his weak points were. He scored slightly higher this week, and the improvement is there. He is struggling with time, but we'll fix it. He is a fantastic student!"
"The student took a practice math test. She needs to work on the midpoint formula, finding the least common denominator, and using the zero property to solve for x. She took good notes and easily picked up on these issues."
"Today I met with Sarah to finish up our coverage of E&M. I prepared some practice problems ahead of time and we spent the entire time working over those. I've prepared a few more for tomorrow so that we can properly finish coverage of magnetism before we move on to optics."
"Today I met the student for the first time, so we spent our session discussing the structure of the test, scoring, and some simple tips for each section. He is familiar with the structure of the test and I was able to clarify some questions he had regarding the essay. Next, we went through an abbreviated practice test, reviewing some tips before beginning each section and pausing at the end of each section to go over answers and discuss any difficulties. Finally, he wrote an essay with a prompt from a old exam which I will grade in time for next week's session. He is strong in the math and writing sections of the test but struggled with the reading comprehension section."
"Talked to mom about plans (SAT, maybe another ACT, SAT subject test, etc.). Reviewed sentence and paragraph correction, and reviewed missed problems involving plural vs singular, and tenses. Talked about what needed further work in critical reading and vocab sections."
