Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Congratulations to the student for the 90 she made on her final! That's excellent. Today the student and I went over chapter 13 as well as her homework for chapter 13, and we reviewed chapter 14."
"Student 1 wanted to practice his speech for the second round of his competition. I timed it for him and gave him some feedback regarding the delivery and contents, and we discussed what he still wanted to work on. He also wanted to work on some art homework €“ comparing two pieces of artwork €“ but had trouble finding on the internet the two pieces his teacher had asked him to compare. We worked on it together a bit, but then our time was about up and we decided it was best if he talked to his parents or art teacher further for more assistance. Student 2 wanted to practice math concepts he has been learning. First he asked me to name some points that he could graph in a coordinate plane, then we talked about the shapes formed by my points (triangles, parallelogram, etc). Next, he explained to me a game to practice algebraic thinking that his teacher had taught them (kind of a €œdecoding€ game using lots of variables) and we tried playing it together, which was fun and good practice."
"We had a quiz today on chapters 3 & 4. I also assigned some homework problems for him to work on. We continued reviewing the related rate problems and chapter 5 topics. "
"We went over guestimation again. The student has a little difficulty starting the problems, but once she gets going, she's got it. Then we practiced some probability and proportion problems. She's good at both of these, probability problems are not her favorite. We also talked about reading clocks and comparing amounts of time that things take. She has homework to look at her clock four times a day and quiz herself on what time it is."
"We went through the homework and the take home test. ( Which the student said she asked her teacher if it was okay to go over with me, and she said that was fine.)The student needs to memorize the formulas for her next test. She has many of them already memorized, and were viewed most of the homework without looking them up and checked them. The take-home test seemed easier than most of the problems have been, so I think she is definitely improving on those skills."
"The student seemed significantly more comfortable with the math problems that we worked through today. She was really attacking the tougher problems which she would usually skip or shy away from. Additionally, I feel as though I know which math concepts are still troubling her and I am in the process of making her a study guide. I told her during this session that she will have to take a full-length practice test over the weekend just to give her a heads up. Overall, she is definitely making progress and I am happy to see that she is really noticing the difference!"
"The student and I focused on improving her reading section today. I outlined the general strategy for reading questions and vocabulary questions. We then worked through several sections until she began to master the strategies."
"Today was our last tutoring session before the student takes the SAT. We reviewed sections from his PSAT booklet, math multiple choice questions, sentence error identification, and I administered a final mock essay."
"The student and I discussed the essay he wrote and compared it to the SAT rubrics. He worked 50 grammar problems and we went over the results. We went over the arithmetic problems that might be on the SAT."
"The student and I worked on two homework assignments: one involving writing sentences using "mystery" vocabulary words. It was great to work with him on his phrasing and use of descriptive words. Then we worked on some solving of proportion math problems, which started out a little confusing for him but he quickly got the hang of it."
"My second session with the student went very well. We continued our review of grammar structures previously introduced as well as continued our study of his current material for school. He was prepared for the session with questions from class since our last session. I worked with him on how to critically read passages to understand the gist of the passage as well as decipher specific grammatical points (i.e., gender of nouns by analyzing the form of adjectives). He worked on his homework for his next class session."
"The student and I worked through the practice Chemistry exam. She has a solid chemistry knowledge base and understood all concepts. Next session, we plan to finish up the remainder of the free response."
