"The student and I went over practice problems for Ch. 5 again this week. The main focus was to see how he understood word problems and the steps he took to solve a problem. I gave him an outline on how to set up the problem by figuring out what was the given information, what formulas apply, and also to check that the units match up. After helping him organize, he seemed to understand the process better and also has a better grasp of mole-to-mole ratio. I sent him some extra homework problems to practice for the exam and also told him to finish two AP chemistry questions provided by his teacher. He will send these to me by Wednesday and I will email him back the answers with steps on how to solve for the questions written out."
"We went over orbital diagrams and electron configurations. I showed the student how to construct orbital diagrams by filling up energy levels one at a time, and explained the chemical background behind atomic orbitals. We went over more practice problems with orbital diagrams and determining electron configurations for elements, then went over the student's elemental light spectrum lab. We then went over the student's math homework and I explained how to graph absolute value functions. The student seemed to grasp the material very well."
"During this session, the student and I went over the review for her midterm this Friday. Prior to the session, her mom sent me the review, and I worked it out with a detailed explanation of each question and gave to her to keep. During the session, we went over problems that were giving her trouble. The main topics were 2D motion, F=ma, torque, and graphs related to position and velocity."
"Today we did a review of chapter 8 (metabolism and enzyme biology) now that the student has a better chemistry base from the last session. We talked about many of the metabolism concepts in light of cell respiration and photosynthesis since these are concrete examples she already knows. Some of the topics covered included catabolism/anabolism, endergonic/exergonic reactions, laws of thermodynamics, and free energy. She struggled with catabolism and anabolism in regards to cell respiration and photosynthesis (she had them flipped), so I will continue to quiz her on this topic in future sessions to make sure she understands it. The chapter also covered enzyme biology, which included a discussion about the activation energy of a reaction, the active site of an enzyme, enzyme activity graphs, temperature/pH factors, and different types of enzyme inhibitors."
"The student and I worked on chemistry for her exam tomorrow. I reviewed and tested her on the concepts covered in her review packet. She seems well prepared and should do well on the exam. We finished covering chemistry in an hour so for the second hour we completed some ACT preparation in the English section. We went over strategies and did and English passage together, which she did very well on. I'm very excited to continue the ACT preparation with her."
"More gas laws and Hess' laws were covered. The student is doing well with these two concepts. He had a positive attitude for the material reviewed and was patient with working through the difficult problem. A note in progress was made in regards to understanding how to work gas laws problems and how to derive certain equations from the ideal gas law. The win from this session was definitely gaining greater understanding with the material!"
