El Monte, CA MCAT tutoring
The student and I went over the practice problems she did since our last session, as well as review of some material she had questions on. We went over review of hormone concepts first - the difference between endocrine, paracrine, and autocrine, the differences between aldosterone and ADH and how to know when one of them is the primary hormonal response or the other (blood volume v. dehydration), and the differences between hypothalamus signaling with anterior pituitary and signaling with posterior pituitary. Then, we went over all three passages she did. The first one she struggled the most with, and it was about G-proteins, peptide hormones, and catecholamines. We reviewed the sympathetic nervous system and discussed G-proteins while going through the problems. As always, we went over how to read the graphs and use the information given by the passage to solve the problems. Then second passage was about G-proteins in relation to hCG and leptin; the student got most of these problems right so we only went over a few of the concepts. The difficulties were mostly relating to reading the graphs and experimental data. The third one was about GnRH, LH, FSH and the androgens. We reviewed the hormonal cycles for these hormones and discussed the problems. We are going to continue going over passage problems at our next session.

The student and I began with a thorough review of acid and base chemistry, discussing equilibrium equations, pH, pKa, Henderson-Hasselbalch, and titrations. She seemed to pick up on the concepts well, and we made sure of this by testing her knowledge with targeted practice problems. We then moved on to similar concepts, solubility and equilibrium in general. After this, we finished with an in-depth discussion of electrochemistry, covering the details of redox reactions, standard potentials, and galvanic and electrolytic cells. We will meet in less than a week's time to continue working through her study plan.

The student and I worked mainly on physical science diagnostic number 2 and biology diagnostic number 4.
