Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed content from the beginning of the week and started in on algebra (multi variable equations and solving for x and y). I also reviewed LCM and GCF with the student. I assigned a homework review of old geometry problems. We will meet Monday."
"The student and I are making steady progress towards improving his math score. He stuck to our agreed upon study schedule of one portion + assessment every day, and has been continuing his verbal studying and taking practice problems on his own. Today we wrapped up the arithmetic section with discussions on the number line, negative numbers, ratios and percents. We discussed each of these topics individually and I gave him a few ways of thinking about how the topics can be combined to create entry exam-level problems. During this time we also worked on a few of the practice problems in his book. After this we spent about half an hour going over a few practice problems from an online question bank. I think we've set up a good study schedule that should be finished in three weeks. Hr. is improving in his mental math and is not overly reliant on calculators and following the steps. I am encouraging the idea of developing an intuition for math problems, rather than just following the rules. Mistakes happen all the time, and identifying when a mistake has been made is essential for success in the entry exam."
"3/20: In today's session, we split our time between practice problems in critical reading, practice problems in math, and vocabulary exercises. For critical reading, the student's speed and percentage of right answers has definitely increased since last week, and he's going to continue working through practice problems in his test prep book this weekend. For math, he's still struggling to put together all the elements of complicated arc/sector problems, so I encouraged him to do more math practice problems in his test book. He's also going to review the arc/sector lesson and do six practice problems online. We finished with sentence-writing exercises to practice vocabulary, and he showed good retention and understanding of most of his recent words. He's going to keep practicing his vocab this weekend. Some consistent all-around progress this week -- he should be pleased with himself!"
