Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Worked on present tense while introducing new vocab (time, days, family, schedule). Left workbook for student to practice."
"We covered more reflexive verbs and also had conversations about social media and age. For the next session we will focus more on developing and/or starting to develop new grammar structures."
"We reviewed parts of speech and did some review and vocabulary exercises. The latter covered basic nouns and adjectives, including color."
"We finished our last session with watching the rest of ?Eres tu, Maria? After each episode, the student continued to carefully summarize the events in the episode. For her benefit, I sent her the worksheets that go along with the series so that she has this activity as an example if her class does something like that."
"We focused on superlatives and comparatives. The tricky part was working out the difference in structure between the Spanish and English ("el/la/los/las + mas + adjective" and "el/la/los/las + noun + mas + adjective"). The student understands the pattern and was implementing them correctly by the end of the practice problems we did. I gave her links to a website where she can do graded practice for these grammar concepts. She understands and learns quickly; it's mostly a matter of more practice to solidify the concepts."
"We met for the first time and discussed the student's needs. She said she needed a review of Spanish I. So, we discussed how to conjugate verbs, using a beginner's English-Spanish dictionary that had some verbs conjugated in a grammar section in the middle of the book. To help her form a basis of comparison between English and Spanish, she was provided with a chart with verb forms in English (e.g., simple present, present continuous, and present perfect) and then given an explanation as to the common verbs associated with those forms. The verb "comer" (to eat) was used with the chart to show how the verb forms look in Spanish. Finally, we discussed comparisons. I suggested doing some exercises from a Spanish workbook I brought along."
