Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I spent this session helping the student study for an upcoming final. I started by going over material on area, surface area, and volume for various shapes, going over a few formulas, but focusing more on intuitive rules. After that, we moved on to how to find the characteristics of a line given an equation and how to graph it, then how to find the distance between two points. Finally, I spent the rest of the session going over the various ways of solving triangles with her."
"We went through the student's biology textbook and his tests. I explained the concepts that he was struggling with and asked him to explain them back to me to make sure he understood them correctly. We covered the whole test, and he will study for the rest of his tests by himself. He is doing well."
"In today's session, the student and I continued to work with geometric properties of circles. This time, he had exercises involving inscribed angles of circles. We had to use theorems that relate central angles to inscribed angles of arcs. We also needed to use properties of inscribed quadrilaterals. With our initial calculations, he was doing well. We made sure to review which is the inscribed and central angles when applying this theorem. After going to his book for the relevant theorems about quadrilaterals, we worked through a few exercises together. This topic was more difficult, so we reviewed several examples in detail. Overall, he admitted this was a more difficult topic, but understood the ideas better, and was solving exercises on his own by the end of the session."
"We worked on a review of homework involving circle theorems. Once the distinction between central angles and inscribed angles was clear, most of the rest followed quite readily. Afterward, we started to look back on previous chapters in his science class in order to prepare for the upcoming file. It looks like the student has some organization to do, but we were able to find what we were looking for. This phase of studying isn't a lot of fun, but the rewards are great, because it is much easier to learn something that has been learned once and forgotten than to pick it up from scratch."
"We covered how to turn decimal answers into exact answers. We also covered area, volume, and surface area formulas for a variety of shapes, and how to solve for them. This often included using similar polygons and proving congruency/ similarity. Mostly we worked on prep for her final and for her unit one and unit five re-takes."
"The student and I prepared for his final exam in geometry today. We worked on circles, area of polygons and sectors, arc lengths, trigonometry for triangles, and related topics. He is smart and I can tell he is very hardworking. He did well with today's review, and I look forward to reviewing more with him this week. One thing I would recommend for him is to begin working on memorizing formulas we used today to help him best conquer his exam."
