"Student and I worked on her history homework, which involved reading text and answering comprehension questions. She and I worked on her grammar homework about literary devices in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry."
"I worked with the student on his independent reading book. We read one chapter. We took turns reading, which helped with him being able to stay focused on the book. After he read I would have him retell what happened. As I was reading, I would ask him to make predictions about what was going to happen next. Overall, he did a great job and because the book was self selected, he was very animated and engaged in the reading as well as our conversations about the book. He was also able to compare and contrast the book to the video game."
"The student received a 15.5/18 on the first part of her test. We are working to improve for her next exam next week. During this session, we looked at figurative language in several passages. Also, I explained what context is and how it is helpful in identifying the meaning of a passage. The student seemed to understand what context is and she was able to correctly answer most of the multiple choice questions correctly. We concluded by going over her vocabulary words, and I asked her to form sentences with her words."
"Today we focused on a few assignments for the week. One assignment was her weekly current events assignment, another was a writing assignment for her DVS class. We are also still working on her college essay for the common application."
"Today we focused on character. The student has a poster project due soon that requires him to list the personality traits of a character using evidence from the text. We went over what that means, and how he can find evidence. We also used his own story as an example, and he did a great job of using small details to gain further insight into the character. We ended with some quick writing about what we could observe around us, so that he could get a better handle on adding detail to his writing. It was a great session."
"Today we focused on how to organize your thoughts when preparing to write. The student was given an option of four different questions to respond to and chose "what was the best time in your life?" He chose to write about his trip to Atlantis. We spent extra time addressing the important idea that in order to brainstorm and write the best response you can, often you have to stream of consciousness put your ideas down on the page. Then you can read them back and rewrite them from there."
