Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did not receive her exam yet. She has another exam coming up next week. This time, we focused on the climax of a story. I helped her understand the concept of rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. We went through several examples in her reading packet. We also looked at some of her assignments from English class, where she is learning about summary. She had a better understanding of how to summarize, so I used the opportunity to continue working on climax."
"We worked on the student's ELA assignment, focusing on taking notes as we read and identifying literary conventions like metaphors. Afterwards, the student said that he had no other homework, so we reviewed the science notes that he has taken in class."
"I quizzed the student on his vocabulary words for tomorrow's test. We then worked on practicing for the exam. He read a few passages which were followed by multiple choice questions. We then continued with passages followed by short and extended responses. The last part of our session was spent on reading two stories about people who live unusual lives. He had to choose which lifestyle he would prefer and write an essay stating the reasons for his choice."
"Today we finished reading "The Magic Finger" by Roald Dahl. I asked the student questions about the book and had her write her responses. When she finished with that task, we edited her work and had her add four more words to her personal dictionary. She wanted to play, but would go back to task after I encouraged her to do her best. I let her take the book with her and told her grandfather that he could read it with her."
"Today we finished The Lightning Thief and began writing a summary using a graphic organizer. We checked out books about Greek mythology and will compare and contrast the information about Greek gods in the non-fiction books and The Lightning Thief."
"Today we finished the student's science lesson covering the human body systems. We then completed his reading log, which he typed up. We finished the session with some times table flashcards, particularly the 7's and 8's, because that is where he struggles. Today he was able to get most of them quickly, and only had to count for the ones higher up (in the 9's and up). I believe in time he will get better at them! He did good today!"
