Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we continued to work on the student's vocab and grammar skills. She struggled a bit with this week's words because the chapters progressively get a little bit harder. She did well with the grammar review, and I am pleased with her progress!"
"The student is preparing for an upcoming exam. The exam covers lessons 1-4; we had gone through much of the material, but we went through all of it again to confirm her understanding of central idea and details. She occasionally struggles with questions asking about a passage's main idea, but she has improved. I told her she should act as if she is explaining the passage to someone who knows nothing about the subject; what is the one sentence she would use to explain it? She will continue to read through her notes. When she gets it back, we will go over the test."
"We worked on writing strategies. The student has been asked to produce a final draft of his essay for our next meeting in April. He took his exam and feels he did well, in spite of not finishing portions."
"Today we focused on elements particularly relevant to oral communication, including the variation of vocabulary and sentence structure, and the use of strong verbs. We discussed how the student could best represent herself and her efforts through using vivid, specific language in describing the hotels that she visits and evaluates. Despite some technical difficulties (!), we exchanged PowerPoint slides to discuss how she uses these in her talks. We also briefly reviewed grammatical issues associated with sentence fragments."
"Today we focused on listening comprehension. We listened from chapters 1-25 of the audio textbook that I recommend to the student. She has been listening diligently in the mornings and is able to understand and translate about 95% of the CD's context thus far. I helped her translate and also helped her record in her notebook which pages of the book correspond with which listening tracks of the CD. There are 44 tracks in the CD that accompany the book. We will continue to through the chapters and process the content."
"Today we focused on reading comprehension for the book the student is reading, "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. He remembers the information pretty well but is having difficulty with appropriate annotations (they are not detailed enough). I showed him how to do a good one, so his assignment is to make more for the new chapters he reads in addition to improving the old ones he has already read. I will be checking these next week."
