How can a tutor assist you in conquering Phonics?

Phonics teaches your child how to relate the sounds of language with the symbols of written words. It is one of the key tools used to develop the reading skills of young students. Instruction in phonics generally begins in kindergarten and continues into second grade, at which point your child could be expected to have basic reading ability. Given the importance of reading in school and in life, you owe it to your child to make sure they understand phonics. A private phonics tutor in Duval County, FL, can work with your child to try to get them back on track in their reading skills.

Phonics ability is developed sequentially, with a focus on the consonants first and the vowels thereafter. Once children associate the letters of the alphabet with individual sounds, they can begin sound out, or "decode," the words on a page. Progressively, phonics then helps them recognize common groups of letters and the blended sounds they represent. Additional instruction in prefixes and suffixes, and their meanings, could give your child the knowledge base they need to read age appropriate texts. If your child needs help with phonics, Varsity Tutors' educational directors in Duval County can locate a tutor who could accelerate the development of their language abilities.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Duval County, FL Phonics tutoring
The student and I began our session with a little "get to know you" activity in which we talked about our favorite things. I used this conversation as a transition into opinion/persuasive writing. We focused on his favorite animal and wrote an organized paragraph that stated his opinion, provided 3 reasons, and included details. We also talked briefly about some foundational writing skills (capital letters, punctuation, and spacing). It was a pleasure working with him, and I look forward to our next session focusing on writing about games. He was provided 2 practice assignments that parallel the opinion writing we did today.

We went over the student's power words with the flashcards, and then we spent the remainder of the session working on letter formation, handwriting, and power words. I used a shallow box, covered the bottom with salt, and then I let her use a chopstick to "write" her power words, letters, shapes, and numbers. She really enjoyed it; she thought she was playing the whole time. She stayed very focused throughout the session; the added sensory play really helped keep her engaged.

I gave the student an assessment to give me an idea of how he does at recognizing words out of context. I also had him fill out a survey to see how he feels about reading and what he prefers to read. We then read a few chapters of a short chapter book together. This allowed me to see what kind of reader he is overall. For next time, I plan to have activities to work on vowel sounds and blending consonant sounds. He was very sweet and cooperative for the whole session.

The first 30 minutes were spent brainstorming a group essay the student and three other students will work on. Following this discussion, we worked on practicing for the SAT writing test that he will take next school year. We specifically practiced writing conclusions. After I explained what the SAT examiners look for in a conclusion, he wrote two. He did an exceptional job on one of them.

We worked on analyzing poems for the beginning of the session. We reviewed two web pages with literary terminology (one is general and the other focused on poetry). We made a strategy for the analysis. This strategy included reviewing terms, researching the poet, and finding historical information surrounding the publication time. For the second part of the session, we continued reviewing her math paper. She completed further research, and she began the writing process. Between today and tomorrow, she will complete the math, and we'll use tomorrow for review.
