How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test, or HSPT, is a standardized test that is administered by many private schools to help them make decisions regarding admissions. If your child is planning on attending a Catholic school, they might be required to take this exam. It is given twice a year and assesses one's abilities in subjects like language arts, mathematics, and reading. Since scoring high on this test is an important factor regarding one's admission status, it is important that your student is adequately prepared for test day. Fortunately, the educational directors at Varsity Tutors are experienced at connecting students in Duval County, FL, with HSPT tutors.

Varsity Tutors can assist you in finding a HSPT tutor near Duval County who can try to help your child prepare for test day. They may be able to work with their instructor to understand difficult concepts and solve challenging problems. Since every lesson is conducted in a student-centered environment, your child is able to engage with their instructor as they study. This means that they can benefit from important feedback and simplified explanations that are designed to help them better understand the material.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Duval County, FL HSPT tutoring
We covered proportionality (fractions, decimals, and percent), linear equations, and slopes in relation to proportionality. The student started off the session with his homework on the exponential decay equation. His attitude was very enthusiastic. While he was working on proportionality, I went over his work to gather what concepts I should cover from school. (I requested a copy of the course syllabus for our consequential sessions.) I asked him to make some corrections on a previous test that were related to the linear equations and slopes.

We covered Reading both science and fiction genres and practiced using reading strategies. We first thought about the correct answer to a question in our heads, and then we looked at the options and eliminated the ones that are obviously wrong. Then, we finally picked the right answer based on solid evidence in the text. The student quickly grasped this method of looking for answers in the text, and she has also improved in terms of reading speed!

We covered reading, math, analogies, and verbal and worked on strategies for test-taking. I told the student to bring a regular watch to make sure that he stays on track with the time. In regard to the reading, if he finds a passage that confuses him, he should go on. His reading is strong now. He just needs to make sure that he takes the time to look for the answer in the passage and not give up. His analogies are good. Make a bridge, and make sure the words fit into the bridge: same/different/part to whole/whole to part/degree or tool and use. If he does not know what one of the words means, he can just look for those relationships between the other words in the answers. I told him to take off Friday and be well rested. Don't forget to breathe! Tomorrow night, he should work at vocabulary on flashcards and do one or two reading passages. I think he will do well. He worked hard!

We covered reading, verbal analogies, and math during this session. The student did very well identifying relationships in verbal analogies and has a solid understanding of most math concepts. He does need to expand vocabulary to excel with verbal analogies. He is struggling a bit with reading comprehension. He overlooks key ideas or misinterprets text. I strongly encourage his parents to read articles and passages of books with him and review main ideas and meanings together. Practice makes perfect. He is to watch a video on factoring and take notes for review next session, as well as take a new reading diagnostic.

We covered some word problems, creating equations, and defining multiple variables in terms of a common variable all are related to. Other calculation problems involved percentages, scientific notation, and significant digits. He takes his test in a few days, so I talked to him about attitude. One of the best ways of combating anxiety is to stop viewing the test as high stakes and view it as a puzzle or game. Go into it thinking that you are going to enjoy solving the puzzle.
