How can GRE tutoring help you succeed?

Students who are graduating college may feel they have total control of their learning and study habits. While this can be true in many cases, tutoring can still be of great help. This is certainly the case with being prepared for the Graduate Record Examination, or GRE. Your score on this exam is looked over by prospective graduate schools, and remains on your record for 5 years. The GRE is still another aptitude test. All you learned in your senior high school and college years - related to verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing - is tested. But the study process may be long and tedious. Varsity Tutors could help you make your GRE study sessions more productive by finding you a tutor in Duval County, FL.

Your tutor has taken the GRE, and scored well. They also have taught it for some time, so they know how to put students at ease and teach them the tricks and tips for navigating the GRE. First, the tutor will tell you the topics, or pay attention to your concerns, and then identify exactly what your greatest weaknesses are. It's then possible to produce a targeted, personalized study plan. No matter what topics you will need the most coverage in, the tutor could give you the one-on-one instruction needed to match your learning style and goals. Finding just the right tutor is not a challenge. Varsity Tutors is happy to try to help you discover an independent GRE tutor in Duval County.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Duval County, FL GRE tutoring
The student and I began by working through a practice section from some new material that I sent her. As has been the case in the past, she struggled with some of the more vocabulary intensive questions. We went over some of the questions she missed and I explained how to find the correct answer using clues from the sentences and process of elimination. At the end of the session we went through a number of practice quantitative comparison questions. She missed some questions at the beginning due to a lack of attention to detail and a failure to consider alternative possibilities within the problem. We talked about how she can increase her score by outlining her work more clearly and plugging in different number sets.

The student and I focused on the geometry questions to start our session. We reviewed 45-45-90 triangles and how the diagonal of a square could relate to the circumference of a circle and the sides of the square. We then did a timed practice set, and I encouraged him to mark questions and move on when he did not know how to solve it. He ended up getting a 85% on the practice set, which definitely demonstrated progress. After, we did a verbal set. The student is super strong with vocabulary, and while he is a great reader he often tries to interpret the text instead of following exactly what the text is saying. For homework he is going to do 2 math and 2 verbal sets.

The student and I had our last GRE prep session today. We reviewed old geometry problems with variations. We then did an entire verbal section. We finished with a grab bag of math problems, including rate problems, dice probability problems, and permutations and combinations.

The student and I reviewed practice drills for text completion and sentence equivalency in the GRE verbal section. I focused on guiding her through the process of using key words to understand the sentence and the story that it's telling, and then coming up with a word or words to fill in the blank, then looking at the possible answers. The student became increasingly adept at this process and gained confidence using this technique over the course of the session. I developed a list of vocabulary words from these drills that she can review over the next week. We ended our session by briefly reviewing basic algebra. I left her with a list of basic skills that she can work on over the next week to help her continue to gain fluency in math and vocabulary.

The student and I spent this session working through some sentence completion and the shorter, logic-based reading comprehension passages. He still struggles with the GRE vocabulary, but he seems as if he's become more comfortable with the test material in general. It's difficult for him to answer the logic-based reading comprehension material, but mostly due to the questions themselves, and not his lack of experience with the language. This is our last session before he takes the exam.

Today, we worked on addition (3 digit with regrouping), subtraction (3 by 2 digit with regrouping), and place value and rounding. The student does well when adding or subtracting, but she struggles to round. We will continue to work on strengthening these weaknesses.
