Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I corrected and discussed her homework (reading chapter). Wrote definitions for vocab cards. Outlined schedule of preparation for her exam. The student completed her homework with 79% correct and almost no errors on non-fiction, Science-based selections. She is also working hard on making connections with new vocab she is learning."
"Today the student and I reviewed his vocabulary, which he seems to have an excellent grasp of, and then we went over two texts he's been working on of late. The first, Fever 1791, is a short text about the bubonic plague in Europe. He understands the core concepts, themes, and characters perfectly. We then went over his book, A Monster Calls, which he finished over the weekend. He did an excellent job of synthesizing themes, character arcs, and overall plot points. We talked about possible textual interpretations, which he assimilated quickly and intelligently. Excellent job!"
"Today we covered geometry. We worked through one and a half worksheets concerning triangles. This involved understanding congruency, conjectures, and theorems concerning angles (e.g. vertical angle and interior/exterior angles in relation to parallel lines)."
"Worked on pH and pOH, including a discussion of aqueous self-ionization. Solved for rational and complex roots of polynomials, with emphasis on the fundamental theorem of algebra and synthetic division. Also applied rational zeroes theorem."
"Today we covered various topics in the student's many review packets she had for her final. She felt confident in what she has learned and was able to work through more problems. She says she now knows more and understands more and is feeling ready for her final tomorrow."
"The student and I worked through verbal problems from her most recent practice test and discussed her mastery of the test strategies. She demonstrates sufficient competency with the practice materials to perform well on the test."
"I had assigned the student a number of chapters of content review. His notes were very organized so we were able to go over problems and passages he had done with ease. We reviewed kinematics, especially force diagrams and net force to accurately predict the outcomes of conceptual questions. To solidify his knowledge, I told him to practice numerous different strategies in his studying -- sketches, graphs, etc. I advised him to begin reviewing chemistry."
"He had just taken a second practice test and again received the same score in physics, while improving by a point in bio. Today, we reviewed the science questions that he missed on this practice test. This is one of the best ways to improve, and he seemed to understand the (few) missed questions much better after we discussed them. Overall, his science knowledge is impressive and I truly think that we have almost done everything we can in these sections. Though, we did have a bit of reproduction/meiosis content left to review. Next week, I will have the student complete verbal passages from a few exams. I'm looking forward to it!"
"Today we worked on the entire chapter on circular motion. It not only used the equations of motion, but it also detailed centripetal acceleration and rotational inertia. She made it through all of the practice passages together and she did quite well on them. I assigned her practice test from that section."
"This was my first session with the student. During this session, we did some general chemistry for the MCAT. Specifically, we covered solutions and acids and bases. We discussed solubility product constants and how to calculate them and solved problems on them. We also went over how to calculate pH and pOH and how they relate to each other. In addition, we reviewed acidity and basicity product constants and how they are calculated. Finally, we briefly discussed logarithms and did some calculations involving logarithms. We'll be meeting again on Thursday."
"We worked on derivatives and integrals. We also worked on optimization problems with relative minimums and maximums. He has a review packet to study from before his test. No concerns."
"We were able to start right away into the last module of the test. Today the unit was dealing with finding volumes, or in other words taking the integral of the cross sectional areas. It is necessary that now we start to review everything as the final date is coming soon."
