Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week, we worked on independent uses of the subjunctive -- the jussive, optative, deliberative, etc. We translated sentences using the different types, reviewing the sentences that the student had missed in class. He still had issues with some vocabulary, but recognized the imperfect and pluperfect subjunctives when they appeared in contrary-to-fact wishes."
"I help the student review for his final exam. He first translated a reading comprehension paragraph. I steered him in the right direction. We also focused on forms of the verb, uses of the subjunctive, and participles. We discussed what he will do before the exam to prepare in the morning. The student has been great to work with."
"This was the second day of test prep for the exams. We went over the two remaining poems that the student needed to know. We spent time examining a specific poet's style to see how he formed sentences. Likewise, we paid special attention to the vocabulary and rough translations so that she will be able to recognize the passage when it comes up on the exam. This was the majority of the day. This was the last tutoring session with the student."
"The student and I spent this session reviewing the major grammar concepts that will likely appear on his final exam. We talked through brief explanations of each concept and then I had him select Latin sentences from each chapter to translate and grammatically explain. We covered a substantial amount of material: ablative absolutes, the future participle, indirect questions, further uses of the ablative, indirect statements, result clauses, conditional clauses, and independent subjunctives. Next session we will pick up the review where we left it and cover the remaining concepts. He was clearly in the Latin zone today and is starting to show some real confidence when I bombard him with grammar questions. We spent the last 15 minutes doing a few vocabulary drills. I would suggested that he continue reviewing vocabulary this week in preparation for his final."
"In this session, we finished the final chapter of the student's textbook by completing three translation exercises. Before translating, we did the usual review of all verbal and nominal forms we have learned thus far. At the end of the session, I introduced the student to the relative pronoun and we practiced writing out the forms. For next time, the student will practice the forms of the relative pronoun and additional vocabulary."
"The student practiced his recitation of Pater Noster with me. He knows most of the lines, with my prompting him a few times when he left out words. His attitude was good this evening, and he was able to complete a missing assignment for chapter 7 Part I for him to turn in tomorrow. I had him recite Pater Noster and left him with extra practice to go over the prayer after the session until he knows it perfectly. He will be graded on this tomorrow in class and needs an A to bring up his average."
