Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Downey, CA Microbiology tutoring
The student is reviewing topics for the exam. He had completed a packet of graphical kinematic problems I'd left the previous session. We covered properties of vectors, vector addition and subtraction, distance, displacement, speed, velocity in 1D, and projectile motion. I left her a packet for Newton's 1st law and access to online problems for 2-d projectile motion.

We reviewed for the student's final by spending the session on newer topics - fluids, thermodynamic cycles, and conduction of heat. We went through several examples of each and discussed strategies for the exam.

We went over types of bonding (covalent-dispersion, dipole-dipole, hydrogen, ionic) and how these concepts are applied when answering free response questions. Then we went over using specific heat capacity and heat of fusion/ vaporizations to answer complex questions. They seem to kind of understand what to do, but practice will happen to sharpen their skills.

Today, the student and I met for the first time and began working towards a broad understanding of kinematics (the study of motion). We discussed how position, velocity, and acceleration are interrelated, and we also worked through the vector/scalar distinction. I think he is a capable student who needs time to digest concepts and work out their general pattern before he can apply them to a particular situation, so I'm going to do my best during our next session to connect more dots and apply principles to specific problems.

We worked on final exam preparation, looking at oxidation/reduction, precipitation reactions, titration mass percent (iron ore), ideal gas law, ideal gas law in closed system, ideal gas law temperatures must always be in k and never in c, 1 atm = 760 torr = 760 mm hg, standard temperature and pressure, molar mass as it relates to the ideal gas law (pv=mrt/mm), pressures of gas systems, partial pressures of gas systems, and mole fractions of gas systems.

Today's session was based on review for topics that were not covered in the midterms. We mostly went over rotation and gravity, but we also did problems based on forces and free body diagrams. By the end, we also touched on some fluids problems. We will have one more session tomorrow, where we will do more review problems. I have provided notes with how to work on problems from the topics mentioned above and the student seems to be pleased with those and has understood them.
