Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We met for another session of SAT tutoring. We started out by doing grammar practice. The student did well at first, but soon ran short on time. We then moved on to math. She is showing improvement on the multiple choice questions. I will continue to work with her, as her first test date is coming up in about a week."
"Today, we worked on a practice test. I noticed that the student needs to do some review on percentages and algebra. Next time, we will work on another practice test, answer any other questions she has, and discuss more test-taking strategies."
"The student and I thoroughly covered sentence completions, because we want delve deep into individual subjects for her upcoming SAT test in December. We have done a cursory review of all question types, but we will now cover each of these types with great depth in order to see real and lasting improvement."
"Today we did a 3-hour practice test, and the student did GREAT! She got all the scrambled paragraphs right, and she did very well on the reading. The total calculated score was around 512, which is around the amount needed to get into all the schools she likes. If we want to progress, we will have to work more on math and logic. Her progress is very satisfactory."
"Today we emphasized essay-writing, forming an argument, providing evidence, and concluding the argumentative essay effectively. We made very good progress. This has proven to be our biggest obstacle. I hope to instill techniques of extracting information from passages to answer questions, and effectively writing summaries and essays for him to practice on his own. I have left him an assignment to do this exact summary-writing with his own book at home that he just began reading."
"Today we finished Practice Set 3 (Inequalities) and started Practice Set 4 (Rates, Ratios, Proportions, and Percent) in the student's SAT math workbook. In preparation for today, the student took the diagnostic test in the book and scored fairly well. She is curious how this relates to the score ranges typical of accepted students at her favorite colleges, so I encouraged her to do some online research on that question. In the weeks between this and the next sessions, she will also take the third practice test in the SAT prep book, take one of the online practice tests, do Chapters 3, 7, 9, and 11 in another prep book, and, as much as possible, keep reading the prep book's content chapters. I will take a look at recently published SAT books in the bookstore."
