Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Downey, CA GRE tutoring
The student and I completed timed practice and reviewed his answers for short passages and argument structure passages. He is getting more and more of the short passage answers correct and is improving with his timing; the next stage is to decrease the timing needed even further. We discussed ways to do this: figure out his "game mode" focus strategies, take more mental and fewer written notes, and practice more reading comprehension on passages (without questions) to quicken processing speed. He and I also looked at some argument structure passages and concluded that the questions involving two bolded statements prove the most tricky. In preparation for our next session on Sunday, he will complete some Reading Comprehension Practice quizzes (compilation of long, short, and argument structure) and use Self-Reflection questions to analyze his answer choices and process.

It was nice to sit down with the student for the first time today. We got off to a good start. She's very motivated to make whatever progress she can in the next three weeks. We went over the GRE Math Review, particularly drilling the Arithmetic exercises. Points of focus: odd/even numbers, negative/positive numbers, exponents/square roots, and PEMDAS. Key definitions: integers and other math vocab as we move forward. Math to review next time: She should make time to go over and drilling exponent rules and simplifying square root expressions that aren't perfect squares.

The student and I covered statistics, data interpretation, number properties, and a bit of sentence completion in the verbal section. He needed help comprehending what the quantitative questions were asking, and being able to set up the problem to solve, so we went over those in detail. His attitude was pretty upbeat, and he was ready to learn the material. I shared a few tips that really helped me when I was studying for the GRE, and also from when I took the exam, such as being able to simplify the problem first before solving, and making sure to really drill the problems that may be a bit more difficult, until it becomes easier to solve them. He is feeling more confident about solving the problems he encounters, and has new ways to approach the problems.
