Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I discussed her thoughts on Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" and looked at her outline for the final paper. Her professor left comments/critiques on a digital copy of her outline, but we were unable to open them (she emailed her professor for advice on this matter). We revised her thesis statement to include some ideas that her professor had given her about the reading, and re-organized her introductory paragraph to better fit the course's outline template. We then started transferring her first body paragraph from outline-style bullet points into a full paragraph, with a topic sentence, text evidence, and explanation/commentary, which is where we plan to pick up tomorrow."
"We are working on the application of trig functions with bearing and directions. The student needs more time to understand the relation between locations, bearing, and directions. We will work on more related problems going forward."
"We covered phrasal verbs, dealing with meaning and usage. We're preparing to use a business article next time we meet to go over phrasal and also record it. He is on the phone to work on pronunciation."
"The student completed her sixteenth tutoring session aimed at improving her algebra skills. I initiated the session by reviewing her homework assignment pertaining to functions. She was asked to work out any problems she solved incorrectly on the board, so that I could point out her errors and guide her toward the correct solution. After reviewing the homework, she transitioned to working on her online assignment. Specifically, the exercise required her to respond to a number of multiple-choice problems on functions. After submitting her work, she received a grade of 100% on the assignment. Finally, I typed a number of words problems on the board, which required her to write a function to solve them. Overall, she performed well and made few errors, which suggests that she has a strong grasp on this algebraic concept. As homework, she was asked to complete a review on functions."
"Today the third grade student and I reinforced parts of speech and practiced writing with an emphasis on proper sentence structure. The kindergartner and I practiced writing with a focus on the direction of letters. She worked on addition and subtraction within 5 through a card game. She also read sentences independently and learned several new sight words."
"We went over the ACT Science test. The student's attitude was largely positive. I talked about strategy in terms of how to approach each type of passage and the type of questions found in each passage. I left her with the rest of a practice test to work on the Science section."
