Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the practice test that he took over the weekend. We then did some practice reading passages and finished with vocab."
"We started with a continuation of basic math facts, covering squares and square roots, fractional exponents, and dividing/multiplying with exponents, as well as order of operations (PEMDAS). We then spent the next half hour reviewing vocabulary, while the last half hour was devoted to helping her understand key concepts in algebra II that she will put to use on her next test. These same concepts also come into play on the PSAT, such as finding the slope of a line, finding the rate of change, and converting line equations from point-slope to slope-intercept form and vice versa. Our next meeting will be next Wednesday."
"The student and I reviewed his PSAT from last year. We focused on math and critical reading/vocabulary. He did a super job!!"
"Completed vocabulary exercises, worked through math practice problems, assigned work for next session."
"We went over the practice PSAT test that the student took since our last session. He didn't take it as a timed test; I stressed to him that it is important that he times himself on the next one. We went over his Math and Writing sections. In the Writing section, we went over the strategies to help him improve his Sentence Improvement questions; he did well on the Error Identification questions. He needs to focus on reading each question carefully - in all parts of the test - so that he does not miss important 'clues' to lead him to the right answer. I asked that he go over his Critical Reading section to understand the questions he missed before our next session, and to study his vocabulary flashcards."
"As usual, I spent time on several different subjects with the student. He performed well, and stayed focused the whole time. He does seem to be improving."
"Focused on the Reading section. We will continue to focus most of our energy there, with some time spent on advanced math questions."
"In our session today, the two students and I continued our work in all sections of the PSAT. We compared their progress from an earlier practice test to a more recent one and saw an improvement in all areas. Student A does very well with math and has improved greatly in reading. She has some difficulty with writing, but overall is still doing well. Student B has an excellent command of the reading and writing sections, but struggles in math. I have had her write math PSAT questions in order to get a better idea of what is going on inside the test-maker's head. I hope this will help her improve her understanding and score."
"We reviewed a reading section and math section she completed on her own. Then I tested her on Greek and Latin roots in her PSAT book."
"We primarily worked on reading passages, but we also did a little bit of review on writing towards the end of the session."
"During this session, I started with an overview of the test for the student. I showed him the practice test website, and he made an account. Then I talked to him about what he needed the most help with and took notes so I could create lessons for future sessions. He expressed he needed the most help with vocabulary, so I showed him a website where he could make online notecards. He then took a diagnostic test, which I had prepared from the test in the book. After that, we went through the problems he had gotten wrong or skipped, and I explained them to him."
"We spent most of our time on math again; the student continues to do well with the writing section. She's made good progress."
