Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent some time getting to know each other, since this was our first session. During the session, we reviewed reading vocabulary, focusing on hyperbole, metaphor, simile, personification, idiom, jargon, alliteration, and rhyme. We went over his schedule for the next three weeks so that I am prepared to support him in our upcoming session. I spoke with his mother about shifting to working with him on focus, perseverance, and classroom behaviors after the exam, in addition to academics."
"The student re-read chapter 2 aloud to me and only stumbled over one word. He read chapter 3 aloud (it was 4 pages, the others had been 2) and I took note of the words he struggled with. After he finished reading, I checked for comprehension on each chapter by asking him to tell me about what he had just read and asked additional questions. His comprehension has gone up exponentially through the practice of using flashcards and phonetically pronouncing the words repeatedly with a family member. We made flashcards on the words he struggled with in chapter 3 and will re-read this chapter on Wednesday."
"This was the first meeting between the student and I. After getting to know each other we talked about the ways that his prior tutor worked with him. We talked about the kinds of book he likes to read and some of the challenges he faces when reading. We read a book about the airplanes that really seemed to spark his interest. He felt most comfortable when we would take turns reading pages."
