Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Doral, FL Trigonometry tutoring
The student and I completed questions of her review worksheet as review for her Pre-AP Math test. We reviewed the topics of Lowest Common Multiple, Greatest Common Factor, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. The student understood the concepts of LCM and GCF, but did not understand the way her teacher explained the different methods. We went over the different methods and discussed using the method she felt most comfortable and checking her answer with the other method. We also completed many practice problems with improper fractions and mixed numbers. She expressed better understanding.

The student is doing great! We met for the first time tonight. She is very talented and is overall really good at math. We decided that what we will work on together is increasing the number of practice problems she does at home, working with word problems, and becoming more comfortable at asking questions. We are going to continue to meet 1.5-2 hours per week. She plans on taking the ACT test in January and we will start to prepare for it later in December.

I gave the student a pop quiz to test his knowledge of material, and it showed that he can use some work on the formulas. I will bring worksheets with me for the next time so that he can practice going over surface area and volume of prisms and pyramids. We went over the quiz questions together, and then I left the quiz worksheet with him to correct on his own as homework. The formulas and the answers are in the back, so he can check to make sure he got the right answers. Next, we reviewed this week's homework, which dealt with probability. I explained probability to him, and then we worked on a worksheet that I had brought from home on probability. He was able to solve most questions on his own, without any help. At our next session, I will quiz him on probability and surface areas again.

We did an extended word problem which the student told me was a quarterly assignment called a rubric. The student was enthusiastic. The only concern I have is I would like the student to write a bit more neatly so she can review her work afterwards.

Student 1: At this session, Student 1 and I discussed her homework assignment on rational exponents. This included converting radical expressions into exponent expressions and solving for x given an exponential equation. She only required a little clarification before she was able to complete her homework on her own. Student 2: At this session, Student 2 and I discussed his homework on operations with radicals. His homework required him to simplify each expression into the smallest form. He still has difficulty with understanding and/or remembering basic algebraic concepts. To assist him with this, I instructed him to write out every step. This will help him internalize the process required to solve and is a great reference for future problems. At this session, we covered simplifying a single radical expression, multiplication of two expressions, and division of two expressions. Before leaving, I assigned him some non-homework problems to practice.
