Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Doral, FL Phonics tutoring
The student worked on practicing the progressive tense: past, present and future as it was assigned by his teacher. Then we read a fifth grade worksheet on the history of bubble gum and he answered the questions. I assigned him another worksheet for homework. He also did an antonym game online.

This session was spent as an ice-breaker session to get to know the student, his needs and his abilities. He read model car instructions out-loud to me, then followed them, completing the first half of the model car. We then discussed some of his spelling words, as well as prefixes and suffixes, dissecting each word, its meaning and identifying the base word and prefix. He was very open to working with me, he enjoyed creating the model and is confident he will progress with us working together. His mother is going to get a dictionary for words that he isn't able to pick up from context-clues. His homework is to bring home his new spelling words. On Wednesday, we will begin reading short stories and checking for comprehension, as well as working on his spelling words and comprehension of those within the context of a sentence.

Today, the student and I reviewed the essay assignment for her four-page research paper, chose an essay topic, and began brainstorming information and ideas for the essay. With the ideas we compiled during the brainstorming writing exercise, we created an outline for the entire paper, including a first sentence for each body paragraph and a list of important criteria for each paragraph. I also introduced her to primary, secondary, and tertiary sources; her college's library website; and APA citation styles, as well as presented a number of reading and research strategies. She was confident that she would be able to write a three-page rough draft (three rough body paragraphs and the beginnings of a conclusion) by our next meeting.

Today, the student and I reviewed the first chapter of "The Secret Life of Bees," going over some major themes of the first section and setting the framework for our discussions of the whole book. Unfortunately, the student only read about 10 pages instead of a few chapters like we had aimed for, so we're going to have to take it slow and really focus on the fundamentals. I'd like the student to take the notes that I gave him on the first three chapters as study tools that he can use this weekend to better understand these chapters. I want him to think about all the questions I've written down while he reads each chapter. And when he is finished with each chapter, he will write a summary of the plot points in his own words and use my own summaries as a benchmark for what he needs to pay more or less attention to. As long as the student is keeping up with the reading this next week, I have no worry that we will finish this book and start a helpful process to get the student more engaged with the books he reads.
