Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I focused exclusively on reading passages and answering questions from the practice test book. A major focal point today was intensely close, detailed reading with a view to eliminating possible answers by ascertaining fine details as quickly as possible. Inference problems can sometimes be challenging when passages are laden with technical language and jargon. We worked to overcome this issue by focusing not on understanding deeply the actual intellectual content of the passages but on understanding the relations of words to one another as seen in the excerpts. We will continue to work on close reading of these passages so that the student can become familiar with this technique."
"The student and I worked through his diagnostic reading comprehension work (a compilation of multiple passages of moderate difficulty with 11 questions). While reviewing, we discussed: reading efficiently and strategically by previewing question stems; locating language from the question in the passage; breaking down difficult language and syntax in sentences; and taking brief notes for each paragraph. In preparation for our next meeting on Thursday, he will "translate" some difficult sentences from the "difficult passage" collection and use the "preview-the-stem" method to re-tackle some of the difficult questions."
"Reviewed test taking strategies - namely taking the time to address all possible answers (emphasis on vocab and context clues)."
