Today the student and I went over the verb ser vs estar. He still needs a lot of practice understanding the conjugations of each and the differences in their usage. We also went over idiomatic expressions using tener and their conjugations and usage. I assigned him homework that we will go over next time.

The student went through his Spanish homework on ser and estar. I had him finish the problems and then I created my own that mixed the two. I asked him first word belonged in each blank and then the reason why. In addition, we went through his English homework on To Kill A Mockingbird. He had to answer 7 questions about one character and why or why not he/she was content with the outcome of the trial. He wrote out his answers and I helped him to elaborate and make his thoughts clearer. I told him that I am going to make up a sheet for Spanish with Ser and Estar so that he can continue to practice using each word.

We spent some time organizing the student's notes and his previously made "memory" game. I spent half of the session reviewing numbers, how to say the date and a few key words and phrases using the verb "to be". We played the memory game to review vocabulary. He was very eager to be vocal and repeat words with me today. This is very important as we keep learning new words and phrases. I hope to go over animal words with him next week.

During this session, I worked with two students. Since this was our first session, we discussed goals, classes they are currently taking and subjects that they need help with. The first student wants to study bio medical engineer, while the second student wants to study paleontology. They just completed fetal pig dissection in lab and had their worksheets completed. They mentioned that they did not need any help on Biology today. The second student reported some difficulty in English Literature, specifically, Romeo and Juliet. I sat with them while they both worked on their Spanish assignments on their school website where they would conjugate words to their proper form.

The student and I went over new pages in the textbook. I also explained the name of different rooms and areas in a house, as well as showing the students how many of the rooms have verbs that match them. For example, "You eat in a dining room" - "Comes en el comedor." We went over words they remembered. They gave me words they had never given me before and we learned some new words as well. Then we read a little book that they had about a mom and her little chicks. The chicks get in a lot of trouble. Finally, we watched more of Ponyo. We only have around 35 minutes left to watch. They really seem to enjoy the movie and it is an excellent way to train their ears. We will be meeting on Mondays.

The use of reflexive verbs was done in this session. The student was encouraged to speak about himself and daily activities using the reflexive verbs in French. A portion of reading was also done in French to develop fluency. He was left with extra work for the next session.
