Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, we went through a comprehensive review of the fetal pig organ structure and function in preparation for the student's quiz tomorrow and practical exam on Friday. He recited the functions of all the possible organs that could appear on the exams, successfully completed identification quizzes, and labeled certain structures on dissection photos to simulate the exam. We also used several online quiz resources to increase the exposure to different fetal pig visuals, including quizzes. I would suggest reviewing the functions of the common carotid arteries, coronary artery and jugular vein, as well as understanding the blood composition (oxygen rich/poor) of the umbilical artery. I am very impressed with his abilities in the fetal pig structure identification and am confident about his potential to do very well tomorrow and on Friday!"
"During this session, the student and I continued genetics with looking at recombination frequencies, and related questions. She had a few assignments beginning an overall review of genetics, and we completed these together. She is very confident when she feels like she knows the information well. She struggled with recombination frequencies, however we clarified misunderstandings through continuing to practice questions. She and I will be preparing for her test next week in our next session."
"We reviewed for the student's Biology quiz. She had created a four page summary and we worked on expanding certain concepts, quizzing her the material and then working a few pedigree and Punnett square problems."
"The student reported that she took another pop quiz in math and that she was sure that she did very well on it. Her confidence continues to be reflected in her school work as well as her words. She continued to work on painting the Styrofoam balls to complete her model for ascorbic acid compound. After the Styrofoam balls were set aside to dry, we decided to focus on the essay for her presentation. She had taken notes from a science site which involved a total of three statements. She needed to write a three paragraph essay with 5-7 sentences per paragraph. I discussed with her how she could get more information and place the info into the graphic organizer."
"In this session we first discussed the structure of his math and science class to get a feel for the topics he was struggling with. For science we started by going over his current unit over the cell. We discussed the different components of the cell, the functions, and differences between the plant and animal cell. We also took some time to memorize all these and answer questions about different components. For math we mainly focused on the equation for a line, finding x/y intercepts, and finding slopes."
"The student is working on physics now. We worked on a physics sheet she has due as well as did some algebra review for a test she is going to take this week. She is covering exponents and scientific notation now. She did fine in her algebra review and she seems to do well with her physics homework as well."
"The student has a project on evolution and the Jurassic period. We studied dinosaurs and rock formations. She got an A on her last science test and is feeling more confident in science!"
"Today we studied for an upcoming test in science on simple machines. We then reviewed her work for math on the order of operations."
"Today, the student and I worked on a science project due Friday on the Olympic torch. We also worked on science homework and reading comprehension test prep."
"During this session, I discussed with the student his Space Travel Brochure. He came prepared to our session with a rough draft of 2 new space destinations. We spent much of the session discussing revisions to his writing for each of the 4 travel destinations his travel brochure offers. Again, the student did an excellent job writing his blurbs in a persuasive and catchy tone. He enjoys being creative and writing first drafts, and he is slowly but surely accepting the fact that strong writing requires revision and that revision is a necessary and crucial part of the writing process. He also wrote and revised blurbs for the two lodging options his brochure offers. The lodging options he created were zany and perfect for a space travel brochure set in the future. We concluded the session by brainstorming restaurant options, and the student outlined one of the three restaurant options his Space Adventure will offer."
"We did a bit of rotational math, then spent the rest of the sessions discussing the physics of fluid pressure and helping the student plan out her school poster project on the topic."
"Session commenced at 4:30pm and concluded at 6pm. Session consisted of reviewing the student's Science worksheet which focused on the periodic table, minerals, Moh's table, and other geological aspects."
