Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was the best session we've had. The student was eager to learn. He's got a great, quirky sense of humor, and it really came out today; we had fun going over these problems together. We first discussed a math section that I'd assigned him for homework. In assigning the section, I'd emphasized the importance of taking his time with the questions, and this paid off, as he answered many questions and he only got one wrong. He was quite clearly pleased with his performance, and I think the tangible evidence of his patience finally registered with him. I assigned another three sections for homework, as the test is next week."
"We started by tackling a variety of grammar and usage exercises that I had selected for her from the book, working together to rewrite sentences, and then to complete SAT style multiple choice questions. We then reviewed a SAT math section that she had done for homework and I showed her some shortcuts that would help her save time. We went over what will and will not be expected of her on the SAT so she could look out for tricky questions that seem more demanding than they actually are. We also worked through a critical reading section where I was slightly more hands off than I had been in previous practice sections, so she could get a better idea of her progress. Although she did struggle a bit, there were certain passages on which she excelled, so I am confident that she can even out her performance with additional practice on the sorts of passages that are most challenging for her. She had written a practice SAT essay for our meeting, which she emailed to me for editing after our session. I edited it Friday to give her some feedback before she wrote any additional work."
"Tonight, the student and I looked at the Math section of a practice SAT. She scored a 450 which is 30 points higher than the last time she took the SAT. I am going to look over the questions she got incorrect and see what skills can work on before she takes the SAT in November"
"The student worked on her college essays for the session. We worked closely on addressing the topics and prompts for her preferred colleges. We also reviewed the math topics that she struggled with on her last practice test. I assigned her a worksheet on absolute value and geometry."
"The student worked on some SAT sample questions from the set of practice questions on the platform. We worked through all different types of problems, spending the most time per question on the Critical Reading and Writing sections. We went very slowly and methodically through these questions, making sure to examine each and every answer to determine the correct one. As for the math, the student definitely seemed to be more comfortable with that material, only needing help to get on track to the answer on a few problems. She definitely seemed engaged and ready to work throughout the session. For each question, we went through different strategies to help choose the correct answer, such as knowing and looking for the correct punctuation for certain words on Writing questions. I left the student with an SAT diagnostic test from the website for her to complete before the next session. It was a great first session!"
"The student worked through the math diagnostic test. The questions included a wide array of concepts from algebra, geometry, and statistics. Specifically, topics included graphs, area and volume of various objects, fractions, FOILing, simplifying, order of operations, and inequalities. She showed a high degree of competency, and was quickly able to do most problems. She displayed a very good, focused attitude throughout the session. I suggested she work through one of her SAT study books. Going forward, she and I will continue to work through the SAT math diagnostic test, and will work on individual problems that she might struggle with."
