Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on the first and second derivative tests. We worked through several examples and then reviewed homework problems."
"We discussed concepts and problems related to finding critical points, absolute min/max, and simplifying trigonometric equations to evaluate derivatives."
"The student is working on solving derivatives. Her professor gives Gateway tests, which are basically pass-fail tests, and she must take this test until she gets every problem correct. She understands the basic derivatives, but has problems working through complex combinations of the functions. I showed her how to group functions to make solving the derivative less complex. She worked through several problems successfully. She left feeling much more confident about working the problems."
"For the first hour of our session, the student and I continued working through some assignments from his calculus class. The material just entered into a new topic, finding the area between two curves. I started by explaining to him that these types of problems were very similar to the integration problems that we had been doing in the past, with the only difference being that the integral is taken of the top curve minus the bottom curve, in between the bounds given or those determined by finding where the curves intersect. Because these new types of problems were only a little different than the ones he had already learned very well, he worked through each of them easily and understood the new concept very well. For the last part of our session, he provided a PowerPoint from his physics class, and we reviewed the material, which covered visible light and the reasons why we see the colors we do, as well as the process through which we perceive color. He also understood this material well and did a great job of answering questions I asked him about the content of the PowerPoint."
"During this session we continued to work on integral and their application. We looked at questions of area under curve, finding original function give derivatives, etc. overall this session went well."
"I covered with Selena more application problems regarding exponential growth and decay. We also went back and looked at AP exam practice problems they hadn't covered at school."
