Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This evening, we began the lesson with the student writing a short response to a writing prompt. The prompt suggested he imagine he was somewhere where the temperature was 115 degrees Fahrenheit. I encouraged him to relax and use his imagination, and not be too literal. He wrote a nice paragraph using a number of the sensory words we had discussed previously. We spent the rest of the session working on a second draft of his opinion piece. He correctly followed the directions to state his opinion clearly, anticipate the arguments of those who disagree with him, and use a direct quote from the article he read."
"We covered the basics of the major perspectives and theories of psychology including behaviorism, psychoanalytic, cognitive, sociocultural, structuralism, functionalism, and biological approaches. We focused on the main concepts and important individuals for each approach. The student mentioned that she is struggling the most with understanding behavioral theory. We plan to cover this more in depth in the next session, by delving further into classical and operant conditioning. The student seemed attentive and motivated. I introduced the strategy of breaking down the word to remember the basics of the theories, as well as identifying a letter to easily recall ideas (structuralism- mental structures, senses, systems etc.)."
"The student and I worked on some problems she had from class, and many practice problems. She asked specific questions about one of the problems we'd worked out previously, and we addressed her questions. She worked steadily throughout the problems."
"Today we were practicing singulars and plurals of fruits. I explained to the student how the words end in singular and how to turn them into plural. Then she did practice verbally, and I corrected her if it was necessary. Her extra practice is to practice all the vocabulary that she has. She was very optimistic and happy, and she has been practicing."
"We started off by working through a few reading passages. The boys did a great job with the questions, only getting 1-2 questions wrong throughout all 4 passages. We then switched over to vocabulary for synonyms. No major problems came up here and the boys learned a few more words to add to their vocab lists. Lastly, we worked through the analogies. The boys did really well, coming up with appropriate sentences to show the relationship between the two words. There were a few analogies that threw them off, usually because they didn't know a word or they didn't narrow down the relationship enough. We will continue to work on this next session."
"We went over a practice problem the student did on her own and moved on to discussing speed. When possible, she should try to solve problems by manipulating variables with algebra before plugging in numbers. For next session, the student should read the intro to velocity and try to reproduce the example problem."
