"We worked on optimization problems, this time with volume and surface area, and changing the dimensions of a known area by adding borders. Once the student saw the formulas I was putting together, he was able to work through the questions. He has definitely improved his knowledge of optimization since I last worked with him."
"We worked on optimization word problems, concavity, and convexity. For words problems, the student was struggling with putting the words into math formulas/functions. We worked on how to identify/define your variables, constraints, and functions to maximize or minimize. First, we worked on one example together. Then, I let her do a couple more examples by herself with little to no help. For concavity and convexity, she has a pretty good idea of what is going on. We worked on how to find possible inflection points, confirm an inflection point, and define the intervals of concavity. Her attitude was excellent."
"We worked on the student's review guide for the final exam. We focused mainly on optimization and related rates, working through the details of each problem. She seemed to understand the basics; it was just finding the particular equations for related rates that she struggled with. I suggested that she find another related rates problem with an angle to try tonight, and then we can look over it tomorrow when we meet."
"We worked on two main topics today: optimization and anti-derivatives. For optimization, we broke the process into two main parts: finding the target function as a function of one variable, and using calculus to find the minimum/maximum."
"We worked through calculus review problems for the student's test tomorrow. He understood most of the concepts but just needed the space and audience to work them out and make certain he was doing the math correctly. With only a little guidance he was able to solve all of the questions. He only needs to continue to be careful with his math and to conceptualize how to set up some of the equations correctly. Best of luck to him on his test!"
"We worked through some review for the student's final, covering topics from Chapters 3 and 4. We spent most of our time discussing proofs, spending some extra time on inverse trig functions, hyperbolic functions, and inverse hyperbolic functions. We finished things off with a few other quick review problems, including some limits and optimization."
