Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we studied the German and Italian unification movements. We then began to work on modern reform movements found around the globe. We are most of the way through that section and will continue this next session."
"We covered: - Term paper on the enlightenment - Created an outline, a thesis statement, and wrote the first paragraph"
"The student had reviewed, at least briefly, some potential sources for his paper since our first meeting, but he still had not delved into the research he will ultimately need to do. He expressed his need for a set schedule with which he could work on the paper in small steps, because he has difficulty getting started when thinking of the overall or final project. At the next meeting, I will work with him on setting up such a plan. For now, I recommended that one morning this week, soon after waking, that he read at least the abstracts (if applicable) and introductions of some of the academic-journal articles and scientific reports that he thinks will be used for his paper, make notes about them (especially since his assignment requires an annotated bibliography), and begin to position them with regard to the argument/thesis he will make in his paper, in order to provide the beginnings of an outline. We also made some progress in clarifying what he wants to discuss in the paper. He's not interested in how coverage of obesity in newspapers, magazines, television news, etc., developed in recent decades. Rather, he wants to study, first, the reports and papers on the current obesity problem in the U.S. and, second, how governmental and corporate policies and practices caused the problem. Finally, we reviewed what we discussed last week about searching in academic databases, clarified what databases (and, thus, what academic fields) are pertinent to this project, and found a few more potential sources by exploring a few databases."
